The science behind barefoot running

There is a growing trend away from traditional, heavily cushioned and supportive running shoes toward minimalist footwear such as Vibram FiveFingers or even running barefoot.  Once practiced by only a handful of runners and considered bizarre or foolhardy by most, an emerging body of scientific research is suggesting that barefoot running may be less traumatic to the body than the heel-striking method that traditional running shoes tend to promote.  The video below summarizes some of Harvard Professor Daniel Lieberman’s findings and shows the difference between heel and forefoot striking.
